eTeaching Day 2011 – 2013

With 2011 being my first year at IDeS at Boston College, I was tasked with many rebranding projects. One of the biggest was eTeaching Day. It was a full-day event hosted by the department that included guest speakers, videos, awards, vendor displays and other items. Faculty received postcards in the mail announcing the event. They also received tickets at the event with their name printed on which was then handed in at the keynote speaker event. The custom tickets were then used to announce prizes to audience members remaining at the end of the event.

I was tasked with creating a brand and the related content for all print collateral and video. Videos were enormously involved because we had to go on site and interview students and faculty. The equipment used in the first couple of years was simply a standard definition video tape recorder. We eventually purchased a prosumer DSLR for the 2013 video.

The postcards were labeled with stickers preprinted. It was a week long undertaking for our student assistant workers to place stickers on the cards and then alphabetize them and rearrange them by department and school. I solved this issue in the 2014 eTeaching Day event by getting an Excel file from HR and printing custom postcards that had all of the names and addresses preprinted on the cards.

In years past before my employment, prizes were awarded by attendees handing in the typical orange tear ticket with numbers on it and then waiting to hear their number called out. I solved this problem. After the majority of attendees had registered, I created a .cvs file with the data. I then merged all of the names into the ticket design inside of InDesign and created a Golden Ticket for each attendee. This allowed me to print out 250+ plus tickets with each attendee’s name printed on the ticket. Now attendees could hand in their Golden Ticket at the keynote speaker event and listen for their name to be called for an award instead of listening for a random number.

I modified the language of the Golden Ticket from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory for inclusion on the back of our ticket:

Greetings to you the lucky bearer of this golden ticket from IDeS.

We shake you warmly by the hand! Tremendous things are in store for you. We will instruct you on this day with zeal and fervor. We are preparing other surprises that are even more marvelous and more fantastic for you and for all of our beloved Golden Ticket holders–mystical and marvelous surprises that will entrance, delight, astonish and perplex you beyond measure. Hold this ticket tightly to your person as you arrive to Devlin 008 at noon for lunch, the Teaching with New Media Awards ceremony and our keynote presentation–do not be late!

In your wildest dreams you could not imagine the marvelous surprises that await you!
